Circulation Rules


Obtaining a Library Card

Your first Ruidoso Public Library card is free.

Applicants 17 years and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with a valid library card in order, to obtain their own card. These cards can be issued at the same time.

A replacement Library Card is $1.00.

Library cards are not transferable, not even within families. A library card may only be used by the person in whose name the card is issued or the responsible adult in the case of minors with linked family cards.

Checking Out Material

  • Library member must present a valid library card in good standing

  • Up to 20 items may be checked out on one library card

  • Books check out for 3 weeks

  • DVD movies check out for 1 week with a 2 movie limit per card, per collection (adult, YA or Children’s movie collections)

Requesting Materials

  • Items from the library collection may be reserved from any internet computer by accessing the library catalog, using your library card barcode number and PIN number as login credentials

  • When a requested item is available, you will be notified by phone or email

  • You will be given SEVEN (7) days after notification to pick up reserved item.

  • For materials not in the library collection, there is a request form which can be filled out with circulation staff.

  • Different loan conditions might apply to items borrowed on Inter Library Loan from other libraries  

Library Account Login

  • Your library account may be accessed by logging in to your account.

  • Your login is the 14 digit barcode on your library card

  • Your PIN is 4 digits and may be set with the circulation staff at the library circulation desk

Overdue Material

  • A card holder is responsible for all material checked out on their library card.

  • Overdue material may incur fines and replacement charges if not returned by due date.


If no requests have been placed against the item, library material may be renewed ONCE by any of these methods

  • Call 575 258 3704, have your library barcode number and details of the item to be renewed ready

  • Come into the library

  • Logging into your account

  • Renewal will not be possible if there is a hold on the item


Fines are levied at 10 cents per day per item

Replacement and Processing costs

  • Replacement and processing fees will be charged on items overdue 60 days or more

  • If item is found and returned, after billing as Lost, and before payment, the replacement fee will be waived, but overdue fees will still apply at 10 cents per day.

  • Refunds cannot be made after payment has been tendered for lost items.

  • Damaged items will be assessed by library staff with charges applied according to damage


When library is closed, materials may be left in the drive-by book drop at the main entrance to Ruidoso Public Library.

Suspension of Borrowing Privileges

  • Borrowing privileges of library members owing $10 or more are suspended until payment is made

  • Accounts 60 days overdue and totaling $25 or more may be referred to a collection agency.

  • Borrowing privileges may be suspended by library staff if it is found that the card is being used by anyone other than the person named on the card, whether or not that use was authorized by the cardholder.
